Wrinkles around the eyes are caused by the age-related breakdown of collagen and slowed cell renewal in the skin. While the collagen fibers are responsible for the firmness of the skin, the elastic fibers ensure that the skin can be stretched and contracted without wrinkles. If there is a loss of function of the elastic fibers, lines and loss of tension occur. Other factors that promote the formation of wrinkles are external influences such as UV radiation, environmental pollution, diet and lifestyle in general.
