In front of a group of approximately ten observers, we demonstrated each step of the procedures directly on the specimen while discussing the underlying anatomical principles. One of the most valuable aspects of the course was the intensive exchange with participants and colleagues, highlighting the importance of hands-on education in the continuous advancement of aesthetic facial surgery.
The Importance of Deep Fixation Sutures in Neck Lift Surgery
A particular focus of our demonstration was the use of additional deep fixation sutures placed beneath the platysma muscle. This technique allows for further refinement of the cervical contour and provides additional options when treating complex neck deformities.
Strategic placement of these sutures enables the elevation and improved integration of ptotic or enlarged submandibular glands into the overall neck contour. At the same time, the technique helps reduce common challenges and potential complications associated with neck lift surgery while achieving a more defined and long-lasting cervicomental angle.
Why the SMAS Is the Key to Modern Facelift Surgery
Another central topic of the session was the critical role of the Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System (SMAS) in contemporary facelift techniques. By carefully mobilizing, repositioning, and tightening the SMAS, the rejuvenating effect is transferred to the deeper tissue layers, allowing the overlying skin to remain largely tension-free.
This represents one of the major advantages of modern Deep Plane and High-SMAS facelift techniques compared with procedures that rely primarily on skin tightening alone. The result is a more natural facial appearance, harmonious rejuvenation, and a significantly reduced risk of visible tension, distortion, or conspicuous scarring.
Learning Through Direct Observation
Our group consisted of two surgeons and approximately ten observers. This deliberately small group size created an ideal environment for in-depth discussions and direct interaction throughout the entire demonstration.
Participants were able to observe every step of the procedures at close range, ask questions, and discuss different surgical strategies and technical nuances with us. This collegial exchange is precisely what makes educational events like this so valuable—for both participants and faculty alike.
Interdisciplinary Education at the Highest Level
Running in parallel with our course, several additional advanced procedures in aesthetic facial surgery were demonstrated. Prof. Dr. Dimitra Kotsougiani-Fischer and Dr. Nuria Pfeiffer presented a wide range of upper and lower eyelid surgery techniques, including transconjunctival and transcutaneous blepharoplasty, ptosis correction, brow lift, canthopexy, canthoplasty, SOOF lift, and lipofilling.
At the same time, a hands-on injectables course led by Prof. Dr. Peter Arne Gerber and Prof. Dr. Timm Filler provided participants with practical instruction in facial anatomy and contemporary injection techniques.
Anatomy: The Foundation of Every Successful Treatment
The masterclass once again demonstrated that modern aesthetic facial surgery requires a profound three-dimensional understanding of facial anatomy, including tissue layers, key anatomical landmarks, and the functional relationships between muscles, vessels, and nerves.
Procedures such as the Deep Plane Facelift, advanced eyelid surgery, and precise injectable treatments can only be performed safely, consistently, and with optimal outcomes when these anatomical principles are thoroughly understood.
Continuing Education as the Key to Surgical Excellence
The Facial Aesthetics Masterclass was an outstanding educational event that successfully combined anatomical science, live surgical demonstrations, and professional exchange at the highest level.
For me personally, participating was highly rewarding—not only as a faculty member but also as a learner. Exchanging ideas with experienced colleagues continually provides new perspectives and contributes to the ongoing refinement of my own surgical practice. It was an exceptionally well-organized meeting, scientifically rigorous, and characterized by an inspiring atmosphere of collaboration.
