03 Jun Large pores – cause, prevention and treatment
An even, fine-pored complexion – that’s what we all want. However, the reality away from Instagram filters often looks different. The pores are enlarged or even clogged, the complexion appears coarse and unattractive. But how do large pores develop in the first place, how can they be prevented and which treatments work?
Enlarged pores are a widespread phenomenon that affects both women and men. They usually appear around the nose and on the cheeks. In fact, large pores are the second most common skin problem after spots.
There are many causes of enlarged pores. On the one hand they are genetic, on the other hand they are caused by free radicals (e.g. promoted by UV radiation, environmental pollution, alcohol, nicotine, unhealthy diet etc.) or by incorrect skin cleansing and skin care. Once the small craters are there, many people resort to make-up to conceal the pores, which only makes the whole thing worse. Because if the skin cannot breathe, it is even more prone to enlarged pores. The vicious circle begins.
How do enlarged pores develop?
Pores have an important function on our skin and are actually very useful. The fat produced in the sebaceous glands is transported to the outside through them. This is important so that the skin remains supple and does not dry out. The sebum also prevents the penetration of pathogens and bacteria.
If the duct is blocked, the sebum can no longer drain away. The cause of the congestion is an accumulation of keratinized skin cells at the entrance to the pore. The sebum build-up causes the pore to expand and become larger and larger over time.
What can you do against large pores?
Once the pores are enlarged, it is difficult to shrink them again. This makes it all the more important to tackle the causes of pore enlargement. I consider preventive measures such as facial cleansing and proper skin care to be fundamentally important for pore-fine skin. Once the basic requirements have been met, further methods such as laser treatment can further improve the appearance of the skin.
The right facial cleanser
The foundation for even skin is certainly daily cleansing. This is because dirt, sebum and old skin cells can accumulate on the face during the day, which can lead to clogged pores. But be careful: Too much cleansing or the wrong products can damage the skin. Optimal cleansing should therefore not be carried out with just any products, but should be individually tailored to the skin type and skin needs.
I generally recommend cleansing the skin in the morning and evening with moisturizing, pH-neutral cleansers. However, if you have very sensitive or dry skin, you can also shorten your cleansing routine with warm water in the morning.
Peelings
Exfoliation is a good way to gently remove dead skin cells. The best chemical peels are those that use fruit acids or other gentle acids to remove dead skin cells from the skin’s surface. In contrast to mechanical peeling, the skin’s protective barrier is not damaged by chemical peeling. Calluses are loosened and the pores can be intensively cleansed by the fruit acid. The desquamation process is activated and healthy new skin is revealed. A good peeling also helps to prevent wrinkles and sun damage and to reduce hyperpigmentation.
Pore refinement with retinol
We achieve good long-term results in pore refinement with serums and creams containing retinol. Retinol is an effective active ingredient for treating coarse-pored skin, wrinkles, acne, pigment shifts and loss of elasticity.
Professional deep cleansing of the pores
The HydraFacial treatment is the ultimate when it comes to deep cleansing of the skin. Gentler than a chemical peel but still super effective. The sebum deposits are literally “sucked” out of the pores. And this is how it works:
Step 1: Skin removal
In the first step of pore refinement, dead skin cells are gently removed.
Step 2: GlySal acid peeling:
A gentle peeling softens the deposits in the pores and prepares the skin for deep cleansing.
Step 3: Deep cleansing
This is followed by the actual cleansing of the pores using so-called vortex technology.
You can see all the impurities and blackheads in the “dirty water”. This water becomes cleaner from treatment to treatment – and so does the skin.
Step 4: Hydration
Antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and hyaluronic acid are infused into the skin through the Vortex-Fused-Tip. This is followed by LED light therapy as required. Red light stimulates collagen production, blue light soothes inflammation and helps with acne.
Refining enlarged pores with laser
We achieve very good results with the ResurFX laser from Lumenis® to improve skin texture and refine pores. This fractionated procedure penetrates the deep layers of the skin, stimulating collagen production and the formation of new skin cells. Fine lines are smoothed and the skin texture is refined.
The treatment is minimally invasive and only takes 15-30 minutes. For most skin problems, we recommend 2-6 treatments at intervals of 2-4 weeks. There may be slight swelling and redness immediately after the treatment. The swelling usually subsides after a few hours. Redness the next day or over the following days.
