Anyone strolling through the historic city centre of Basel will notice one place in particular on the banks of the Rhine: the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois – one of the most traditional luxury hotels in Europe. Our practice for aesthetic facial surgery is located right next to it. A location that could hardly be more exclusive, both stylistically and historically.
A hotel with a royal past
The Hotel Les Trois Rois was founded in 1681 as a ‘gentlemen’s hostel’ and has undergone remarkable development since then. It owes its present form as a grand hotel to the Basel architect Amadeus Merian, who rebuilt it in 1844. The list of guests reads like a ‘Who’s Who’ of world history: Napoleon Bonaparte, Charles Dickens, Voltaire, Richard Wagner, Elizabeth Taylor and Pablo Picasso – they all stayed here. The famous open arbour with a view of the Rhine, built in 1749, made the house famous throughout Europe.
The house has a special history with Theodor Herzl, the founder of modern political Zionism. Herzl resided at Les Trois Rois during the Zionist Congresses from 1897 onwards. A famous photograph shows him in a pensive pose on the terrace of his room – the ‘Herzl Room’ with a view of the Rhine. The picture became an iconic symbol of vision and foresight and is still reproduced today.
The name ‘Les Trois Rois’ – ‘The Three Kings’ – probably goes back less to a meeting of monarchs than to the biblical wise men from the East. However, legend has it that three kings met in Basel as early as 1027 – a beautiful myth that contributes to the aura of the hotel.
Stylishly into the future: the current renovation
The hotel has been extensively renovated over the past two years. Under the direction of the renowned architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron, the building has been carefully modernised without losing its historical substance. New highlights such as the ‘Seijaku’ spa area and the elegant cigar lounge ‘The Council’ combine tradition with modern luxury.
